Courageous Rail Employee Receives Life-Threatening Injuries During Mass Knife Attack on Express Service
A valiant train staff member who intervened to save passengers during a multiple knife attack on a express train has sustained critical injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Particulars of the Terrifying Event
CCTV video allegedly shows the staff member trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.
The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Police announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
Crisis Reaction and Consequences
The incident on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been discharged from medical care.
A witness recorded the individual brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” stated a high-ranking police official.
Union Response and Appeals for Measures
Rail associations were quick to commend staff and demand increased measures. One labor official stated he would be “seeking urgent discussions with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and effective procedures in operation”.
A different union leader urged the train operator and government “to move quickly to review safety, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.
Driver Praised for Rapid Action
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He didn’t halt the train in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a union official.
Further Information
Police said they got the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon understood from people's faces that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any additional information.
Rail operations on the affected route are anticipated to have delays until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their journeys where feasible.
Individuals with details that could assist the investigation are encouraged to reach police by sending a message a specific number with a reference code.
